Bishop Jean de Dieu Raoelison, appointed new Archbishop of Antananarivo

The former bishop of Ambatondrazaka, Mgr Jean de Dieu Raoelison is appointed by Pope Francis to head the archdiocese of Antananarivo after the resignation of Mgr Odon Marie Arsène Razanakolona from his pastoral charge.

Bishop Jean de Dieu Raoelison was born in 1963 and ordained a priest in 1996. He studied philosophy at the regional seminary of Antsirabe (1988-1991), and theology at Ambatoroka (1993-1996). He later continued his studies, obtaining a canonical license from the Catholic Institute of Madagascar (ICM) in 1998. He exercised various ministries, notably as parish priest or educator, then he was a “fidei donum” priest in Italy at Lamoli- Urbino (Italia) and did a doctorate in theology in Switzerland in Lugano. Since 2009, he has been professor of Theology at the regional seminary of Faliarivo.

The Archdiocese of Antananarivo has around 2 million Catholics according to the latest statistics dated 2021.
