Podcasts are enjoying growing popularity: around a fifth of Germans listen to a podcast weekly or even daily. This is the result of a new survey by the digital association Bitcom.

EAccording to a survey, more and more Germans are listening to podcasts: 43 percent of those surveyed use the medium, as the digital association Bitkom announced on Thursday in Berlin. Compared to 2021, the value increased by five percentage points.

More than half of the young people between the ages of 16 and 29 listen to podcasts. Almost a fifth of all respondents use podcasts daily or weekly.

Three quarters said they would rather listen to podcasts than read. Three out of ten respondents prefer podcasts to radio. For a third, podcasts are the favorite media format. Very often the conversations and interviews are heard on the go.

The car came in first with 39 percent. This is followed by public transport with 24 percent. At home, 34 percent of users press the play button most frequently when cleaning or tidying up. 18 percent each use podcasts for sports or eating. 34 percent hear them while falling asleep.

Although podcasts are becoming increasingly popular, just under a third listen to an episode to the end. 22 percent hear them only to a small extent. The desired length for an episode is 26 minutes on average. Only four percent want episodes lasting an hour or more.

“A few years ago, podcasts were declared dead, now they are extremely successful and the popularity continues to grow,” explained Bitkom Managing Director Bernhard Rohleder. For the survey, more than 1100 people aged 16 and over were interviewed in a representative survey.
