Voting for the urban local elections in Tamil Nadu took place yesterday. In this context, the BJP has asked voters to remove the hijab at a polling booth set up at Al Amin School in the 8th Ward of Melur Municipality, Madurai District. Agent Girirajan’s insistence caused a great stir.

BJP Agent Girirajan’s statement was strongly opposed by the returning officer and agents from other parties. Following that, the BJP approached election officials, agents of other parties, including the DMK and AIADMK. Agent Girirajan argued. Following this, election officials and agents of other parties informed the police. Following this, the police expelled Kirinandan from the polling booth.

But when Kirinandan went back to the polling booth and tried to fight, the police took him to the police station. Meanwhile, polling official Netaji reported Kirinandan to the police. Following a complaint by the polling official, the police registered a case against Kirinandan for inciting religious hatred and preventing a civil servant from working, and produced him before the Melur Criminal Court. The trial court remanded Kirinandan in custody for 14 days. He has since been jailed.
