BJP urges governor not to sign Lokayukta amendment ordinance BJP spokesperson KVS Haridas told Twenty20 that the governor should return the ordinance. The BJP has come out with a statement as the UDF is scheduled to meet Governor Arif Mohammad Khan tomorrow to demand that the ordinance limiting the powers of the Lokayukta not be signed. Opposition leaders have stated they will not accept the Lokayukta’s flawed government action.

The ordinance to reduce the powers of the Lokayukta was passed by the last Cabinet without much discussion. The crucial amendment was not discussed in the LDF either. Since the resignation of KT Jaleel, the government has been moving to amend Section 14 of the Lokayukta Act. It is against this backdrop that the BJP entered the fray with opposition.

The UDF leaders have sought permission to meet the Governor at the Raj Bhavan at 9 am tomorrow. The governor is unlikely to sign the ordinance in a hurry as the opposition’s allegations about the removal of the government are taken seriously. The governor has also inquired into the facts of the criticism. Opposition leader VD Satheesan has written to the governor asking him not to sign.
