Black Sand | ‘Black Sand’ was screened as a Malayalam presence at the Mumbai International Film Festival

At the 17th Mumbai International Film Festival organized by the Film Division, Dr. ‘Black Sand’ directed by Sohan Roy was screened. The documentary was shortlisted for the International Prism category at the fair. ‘Lakshmi’ directed by Harold Anthony Paulson is another Malayalam film in this category.

The theme of ‘Black Sand’ is the subject of Alappuzha black sand mining and the struggle for survival of Alappuzha. The festival is organized by the Films Division of the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting. Black Sand is a documentary that has won over forty national and international awards over the past ten months.

The film discusses the history of the controversial coal mining in and around Alappuzha and Ponmana between Neendakara in Kollam district and Kayamkulam fall in Alappuzha district, a direct picture of the agitation, various political, economic and social perspectives, and scientific analysis to find practical ways to solve the problem permanently. Director Sohan Roy said he was happy to be a part of the Mumbai International Film Festival.

‘I see this achievement as a recognition for the honest portrayal of issues related to sand mining. We also give priority to such socially responsible films. The international recognition that this documentary has received shows that coal mining has become an issue of international concern, ”he said.

The documentary is produced by actress Sohan Roy. Harikumar did the research and screenplay. Background music is provided by Bijuram. Johnson oversees Iringol editing and Tinu handles the camera.
