(Montreal) Bloc leader Yves-François Blanchet is asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to call his provincial counterparts as quickly as possible to a health summit. This is, according to him, the most urgent issue to be addressed.

During his first appearance in front of the press since the election, Wednesday in Montreal, Mr. Blanchet seemed in a hurry to put the political apparatus back into operation, at the same time asking for the resumption of parliamentary work as quickly as possible.

The Bloc leader said he spoke to Premier François Legault and that the latter told him of his desire to tackle the issue of federal health transfers as a priority. Mr. Blanchet got the same message from Ontario Premier Doug Ford, with whom he also spoke.

According to him, by choosing a Parliament substantially identical to the previous one, the population has clearly indicated to federal elected officials that they deem this minority configuration capable of functioning and that they expect the files to continue their way.

Mr. Blanchet has also refused to assess the balance of power of the Bloc in the Commons, while the threat to bring down the government and cause another election can hardly be used, even if he still shares the balance of power with the New Democratic Party.

Rather, he argued that Justin Trudeau must take note that the people have refused him a majority and that he must therefore take into account the opposition parties in his governance. The Bloc leader even says he is optimistic about seeing this government last over time and he intends to favor the inter-party dialogue approach to get things done.

To this end, he hopes to succeed in bringing together all the party leaders in the Commons in order to find common ground to make Parliament work.
