After the change of sides, it was once again the home team that could register the first opportunity – and again it was dangerously close. Substitute Lukas Ibertsberger had time on the left and played a cross pass for Conor Noß to the center, but the German-Irish player couldn’t put the ball in the net as he was sliding (49.). Shortly thereafter, Maurice Malone tried a shot towards the near corner, but Schmid was alert and did not get surprised (53.).
Two scenes, two VAR checks – one goal for Linz
After a rather calm phase in the game, Blau-Weiß then took the lead. After a long ball from goalkeeper Schmid, Simon Seidl – after a lengthy VAR check – was not offside and left Şahin-Radlinger no chance with his powerful shot (78.). Just before that, substitute Muharem Husković had cleared the ball off the line following a corner (77.).
Shortly before the end of regular time, the equalizer was in the air when Husković set up Cristiano, who had also come on as a substitute, perfectly, and the Brazilian deftly lifted the ball over Schmid (88.). Then things got confusing: Anderson cleared the ball with a last effort – however, it remained unclear whether the rescue operation happened in time before the ball crossed the line completely. The VAR also checked this scene but could not resolve it due to a lack of suitable camera angles. Thus, the on-field decision remained – no goal.
In injury time, the Veilchen threw everything forward once more, but the equalizer was not to come. Austria had to concede defeat at the start of the new Bundesliga season against Blau-Weiß Linz.
