US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said in an interview with Australian news program 60 Minutes that despite the potential threat of nuclear war, climate change poses an even more serious challenge to humanity. According to Blinken, it is difficult to establish a hierarchy between these two problems, but climate change is undoubtedly an existential challenge for everyone.

Blinken noted that global warming is viewed as a major issue in the United States, but that does not mean that other serious challenges to the international order should be overlooked. He stressed the importance of multitasking in such circumstances.

The Kremlin has repeatedly stated that Moscow has no intention of using nuclear weapons and President Vladimir Putin has emphasized that there can be no winners in a nuclear war. Russia has such weapons, but it threatens no one, it was stressed.

However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov acknowledged last April the “very significant risks” of such a scenario, but also reiterated Moscow’s position of principle which considers the use of nuclear forces inadmissible.

Ultimately, Blinken’s statement is not a little surprising, given that the effects of a nuclear conflict could destroy all humanity with no possibility of return, while the climate emergency is something that can be largely contained and finds many critics in this regard.
