This Wednesday, October 11, marks the tenth consecutive day of blockades in Guatemala, initially led by the 48 cantons of Totonicapán and later joined by various sectors.

Perspective Writing

Until today, there were approximately 142 roadblock points, which has caused serious difficulties in transportation, including the mobilization of units that transport fuel.

Mario Ortiz, president of the Union of Specialized Fuel Transporters (Gretec), has warned about shortages in several departments of the country, especially in the west, while inventories are still maintained in the central area. However, he has highlighted that if the situation does not change, fuel shortages at the national level are inevitable.

Ortiz expressed his concern about the impact of these blockades, since they affect various sectors such as food, merchandise, medicines, airports, among others, by paralyzing operations and hindering the mobilization of personnel.

The president of Gretec shared that at the national level approximately Q138.8 million are generated per month in the fuel transportation service, which is equivalent to Q4.6 million per day. However, this figure has been seriously affected over the last week due to lockdowns.

Enrique Meléndez, executive director of the Guatemalan Association of Gasoline Distributors, confirmed the shortage at service stations in the west of the country, and pointed out that transport units have not been able to pass due to the blockades.

Both experts agree that, if the situation is not resolved soon, the fuel shortage at the country level will affect consumers, industries and could directly impact electricity generation. In addition, they request that circular transport units be allowed to avoid greater economic and social consequences.

The situation continues to be closely monitored, and it is expected that it will be resolved as soon as possible to avoid a greater impact on the economy and the lives of citizens.
