The Investigative Committee of Russia (TFR) began checking due to a post on the Telegram channel of blogger Artemy Lebedev about the relics of saints. Lebedev himself announced this on Thursday, December 23, posting a photocopy of the summons for interrogation. According to the agency, the blogger’s post contains “obscene statements about the holy relics”, and may also contain a violation of the right to freedom of conscience and religion.

Lebedev, in response, called the document “blasphemous”, and also called on the TFR to explain exactly which law describes “holy relics” and “how holiness is defined.”

A few days earlier, a blogger criticized the practice of worshiping the remains of saints: “Why do the corpses of Lenin, Kim Il Sung, Mao lie on display in the mausoleums? Why do people want to bow to a dead manager? Why are there queues to kiss some box with dandruff of Sergius of Radonezh?” In turn, Vakhtang Kipshidze, deputy chairman of the Synodal Department for Church Relations with Society and the Media of the Moscow Patriarchate, called Lebedev’s words about Sergius of Radonezh “criminal and morally unacceptable.”
