Blogger Yuri Khovansky left under arrest for another month

The Kuibyshevsky District Court of St. Petersburg extended the preventive measure to blogger Yuri Khovansky, leaving him in custody, the accused’s lawyer Alexander Peredruk told Kommersant. The blogger is accused of performing a song that justifies terrorism a few years ago.

According to the joint press service of the courts, the investigation motivated its petition by the fact that it is impossible to complete the investigation before November 8, when the term of the measure of restraint previously chosen by Yuri Khovansky expires: it is necessary to obtain expert opinions on a number of previously appointed examinations and perform other investigative actions.

The blogger’s defense asked him to choose house arrest or another measure not related to detention as a preventive measure. Yuri Khovansky himself asked for the same, saying that he wants to celebrate the New Year at home with his family. But the court found the arguments justified and extended the preventive measure for the blogger until January 8, 2022.

Yuri Khovansky has been in jail for almost six months, since June 9. He is accused of performing a song that justifies terrorism a few years ago. The blogger did not publish his work on the Internet, but this did not change the situation.

According to the investigation, the comedian sang no later than 2020, but, as the lawyer Alexander Peredruk previously told Kommersant, the stream, during which the song was performed, took place much earlier.

Yuri Khovansky was charged under Part 2 of Art. 205.2 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. If the blogger is found guilty, he faces up to seven years in prison.
