Favorite: sublime Japan
I saw an admirable three-hour Japanese film in competition, Drive My Car, by Ryūsuke Hamaguchi. It is all essence, culture and melancholy, this trip to a theater festival in Hiroshima, this pas de deux between a bereaved playwright and his conductor with heavy secrets. This meditative work, which slowly weaves its threads doubled with references toUncle Vanya by Anton Chekhov, breathes so deeply that it captivates us. I hope that the jury will be able to crown this cinematographic pearl with laurels.
Rant: anti-vaccines
As a regular in Cannes, I have my own shopkeepers – one above all, who always welcomes me by name. We need benchmarks in these meetings.
