NASA has awarded Blue Origin a $700 million contract to build a Mars Telecommunications Network, aiming to enable high-speed communication between Earth and Mars by 2030. The project, part of NASA’s broader plan for human exploration, involves developing a spacecraft to relay data, navigation, and mission-critical communications for future missions.

The $700 million contract, announced on September 1, 2026, is part of NASA’s Space Communications and Navigation program, which focuses on developing infrastructure for missions beyond Earth. Under the firm-fixed-price agreement, Blue Origin will design, build, integrate, launch, and operate a high-performance telecommunications orbiter, with delivery required no later than December 31, 2028. The Mars Telecommunications Network (MTN) will be operational by 2030, providing reliable communications for both robotic and human missions to Mars.

The Mars Telecommunications Orbiter (MTO), built on Blue Origin’s Blue Ring platform, will feature 12 ESPA Grande radial ports and one large forward port, enabling the deployment of scientific instruments and smaller satellites. This modular design allows the spacecraft to support multiple missions, including relay satellites for continuous coverage. Built on Blue Ring and in production now in Huntsville, MTO will enable science, carry payloads, and help lay the foundation for human exploration, said Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp in a post on X.

The MTO’s hybrid propulsion system combines solar-electric and chemical thrusters, providing 3,000–4,000 meters per second of delta-V to maneuver efficiently in Martian orbit. Blue Origin plans to produce up to four Blue Ring-based MTOs annually, with the first unit already in production in Huntsville, Alabama. The network’s primary goal is to address the growing data demands of future missions, including NASA’s Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and eventually send astronauts to Mars in the 2030s.

Current Mars missions rely on limited communication infrastructure, with data relayed through orbiters like the Mars Odyssey and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. However, as robotic and human missions increase, the need for a dedicated network becomes urgent. This is a really, really important linchpin mission to enable human exploration of Mars, said Tory Bruno, president of Blue Origin’s national security group, in a statement. The MTO will not only support future crewed missions but also enhance data transmission from existing assets like the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers.

The MTO will transmit science data, imagery, navigation information, and critical mission communications for spacecraft operating on and around the planet, according to NASA.

Despite the progress, Blue Origin faces hurdles. The agency’s decision to award the contract to Blue Origin over competitors like Rocket Lab underscores the company’s technical readiness, with the Blue Ring platform already tested on the New Glenn’s inaugural test flight in January 2025 in Florida.
