Bluetongue Virus Detected in Sheep from Vroege Vogelbos, Almere

Almere, Netherlands – The first case of bluetongue virus infection in Almere has been confirmed in a sheep from the Stad & Natuur herd that grazes in the Vroege Vogelbos. Sadly, the sheep did not survive the disease. The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) has officially identified the bluetongue virus as the cause of the infection. While the disease does not require the culling of animals, it can cause serious illness and death.

This marks the first outbreak of the bluetongue virus in the Netherlands since 2009, with the majority of infections reported in North Holland and Utrecht. The virus is spread through the bites of infected mosquitoes. A total of 49 cases of bluetongue have been reported throughout the country.

The infected sheep from the Stad & Natuur flock is the first recorded case in Flevoland since the outbreak began approximately two weeks ago. Margrietha Rengers, an employee at Stad & Natuur, stated, “Animal caretakers monitor the herd daily and noticed symptoms in the affected sheep such as weak legs and drooling. Despite receiving treatment from a veterinarian, the sheep unfortunately succumbed to the disease.” The NVWA clarifies that while bluetongue is typically non-fatal, additional factors such as poor diet can contribute to fatalities.

Bluetongue virus mainly affects sheep and cattle, but can also be found in other ruminants like goats and deer. Infected animals may experience fever, lethargy, and inflammation of the mouth and legs. Although cases of bluetongue must be reported to the NVWA, there is no obligation to combat the disease. It is important to note that the virus is not transmissible or contagious to humans. The NVWA is currently investigating the effectiveness of available vaccinations for the identified variant.
