According to Mashable, that capacity can keep a fridge cooling for almost a full 24 hours. While the name suggests it should be used as fridge backup, you can also use it elsewhere in the house to make sure the aquarium stays filtering or your workstation always has power. Installing large power stations or home generators can be intimidating and expensive, but the Bluetti FridgePower is described as a dumbed-down backup battery solution that might just be the smartest solution during a blackout. David Dritsas noted that it seemed limiting to design a device that only really served a single purpose for one, maybe two, appliances, but testing it revealed it is something you set up once and don’t have to think about again. Key specs for the unit include 1,800 W of power, 2,016 Wh of capacity, two AC outlets, dimensions of 13.78 W x 22.83 L x 2.95 H in., and a weight of 41.9 lb.
Real-World Installation and Practical Testing
Essentially, this is a large 10-millisecond uninterruptible power supply (UPS) with a battery bank, an inverter, and two outlets. It can output up to 1,800 watts of power and has a battery capacity of 2,016 watt-hours, enough to run most refrigerators for at least 18 hours based on David Dritsas’s estimates. Plus, you can add up to three expansion batteries for a total capacity of 8,064 watt-hours, which could increase threefold, and more efficient refrigerators than David Dritsas’s could potentially run for up to a week. FridgePower has a narrow design—wider and deeper than it is tall—meant to fit neatly on top of a refrigerator or be mounted to a wall as it ships with wall mounts. It doesn’t have to be a refrigerator you’re powering, either, as it could be a freezer in the basement or medical equipment. Like a computer-based UPS, it’s meant to be always-on, and you plug the fridge into it to receive pass-through power so that when there’s a power outage, the station quickly switches over to battery power. Additionally, there’s a second outlet for running another critical device, such as a 120-volt sump pump or an aquarium filter pump to help keep the fishies alive.
To give it a real-world test, David Dritsas set up the FridgePower at home with a JennAir French door model with a bottom freezer. Having tested its output before using a watt meter, the fridge draws at most 300 watts of power, but on average around 80 to 100 watts since all fridges’ compressors turn on and off during operation, making power needs pretty typical of most average fridges in homes. Despite being just 3 inches tall when laid flat, there wasn’t enough space between the top of the fridge and the kitchen cabinet hanging above it, though there was plenty of room on top of the cabinet which was also able to bear the weight of the station. At nearly 42 pounds, David Dritsas highly recommends that anyone double-check the load-bearing capabilities of whatever you place the station on, going double if you choose to mount it vertically on a wall by mounting it directly to the studs if possible.
Seamless UPS Performance and Accessory Ecosystem
Once situated under the cabinet, installation involved plugging in the fridge, plugging the station into the wall, and turning it on. To simulate a blackout, David Dritsas turned off the power to the kitchen on the circuit panel when hearing the compressor running to test the switchover speed. It was quick, with no dip in compressor noise heard and a lamp plugged into the second outlet not even flickering, proving the UPS feature worked seamlessly. The unit was left to run on battery power until it hit 5 percent, which took almost exactly 18 hours on the nose, while smaller or more efficient refrigerators will get more runtime and larger ones less.
The two main add-ons for FridgePower are the Blue Cell 200 expansion batteries, where you can add up to three, and the Display1, a magnetic LED display giving a readout of available power, power output or input in play, and local temperature and humidity. The expansion battery is easy to add with just two cables to plug into the main unit—one for power and one for data. It has the same 2,016 watt-hours of capacity, and the app or Display1 treats both devices as one big battery with the combined total appearing. However, it is just as heavy and as large as the main unit, meaning adding three batteries looks like about 162 pounds of equipment to factor into installation.
App Integration and Smart Power Management
The optional Display1 magnetically attaches to the refrigerator but only displays information and is not an interactive control. It easily sticks to metallic fridge surfaces unless you have the type of stainless steel that won’t hold magnets, but it merely displays information you can already find on the app or on the on-screen display of the main FridgePower unit.
There is also an app to download, and while the backup system doesn’t require it to work, David Dritsas recommends downloading it to connect to WiFi, download firmware upgrades, and adjust advanced settings.
