BMW Group Malaysia Appoints Raymond Tan as First Local Managing Director

Raymond Tan’s Path to Leadership

BMW Group Malaysia has appointed Raymond Tan Chor Ann as its new managing director, effective September 1, 2026. As the first Malaysian to helm the premium automaker’s local operations, Tan will oversee the brand’s strategy, including the upcoming launch of the Neue Klasse electric vehicle range, which includes models such as the iX3 and i3.

Raymond Tan’s Path to Leadership

The appointment marks a significant shift for the company. Raymond Tan, a veteran of the organization, was part of the pioneering team that established BMW Group Malaysia in 2003. His career began as a product and price planning manager, a role that eventually led him to the company’s headquarters in Munich.

While in Germany, Tan served as a regional product manager, where he was responsible for international product planning and strategic market coordination. Upon returning to Malaysia, he continued to climb the ranks, serving as head of marketing before being promoted to head of sales, where he was responsible for overseeing nationwide sales operations and dealer network performance.

Strategic Priorities and Market Challenges

Tan takes the reins at a time when the automotive sector in Malaysia is facing increased pressure from new competitors, particularly from Chinese rivals. His stated focus is to maintain the brand’s premium status while navigating these market shifts, as well as continuing to strengthen the BMW, MINI, and BMW Motorrad brands in the country.

Commenting on his appointment, Tan said he was honoured to return to lead BMW Group Malaysia at a significant time for the company. My priorities will be to further develop the business, professionalise the retail network, strengthen customer loyalty, and continue positioning the BMW Group as the premium brand of choice in Malaysia, he said in a statement.

A central pillar of his incoming tenure will be the introduction of the Neue Klasse range of models. The company views this transition as a pivotal moment for its local business, aiming to balance traditional luxury expectations with the rapid evolution toward electrification. Tan’s focus will also include delivering premium customer experiences and advancing premium mobility.

Transition of Benjamin Nagel to Regional Markets

Tan succeeds Benjamin Nagel, who concludes a two-and-a-half-year stint as the head of the Malaysian branch. Nagel has spent over 20 years with the BMW Group, having held senior management positions across Germany, India, South Africa, Malaysia, and the wider Asia-Pacific region. He is now moving to a broader regional leadership role as managing director for BMW Group Importer Markets TW, HK, MC, where he will oversee operations in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao.

In his departing comments, Nagel emphasized the importance of the foundations built during his time in Malaysia. I am honoured and excited to take on this new opportunity with the BMW Group to oversee the importer markets of Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macao, Nagel said. “Having had the privilege of leading BMW Group Malaysia, I look forward to bringing the insights and experience gained in Malaysia to these dynamic importer markets, while continuing to strengthen customer focus and premium brand positioning.”

Nagel noted that his priorities in his new role would include driving sustainable growth, strengthening long-term relationships with customers, business partners, and employees, and building on the strong foundations established across the region.

Corporate Outlook from Asia-Pacific Leadership

The transition has received the backing of the group’s regional leadership. Ritu Chandy, the group senior vice president of Asia-Pacific sales, highlighted Tan’s international background as a key factor in his selection. Chandy noted, “I am pleased to announce Raymond Tan, a distinguished Malaysian talent, as the new leader of BMW Group Malaysia. Raymond brings extensive international experience across strategic portfolios within the BMW Group, together with a deep understanding of the region and a proven track record across key markets. These strengths will be instrumental in steering BMW Group Malaysia into its next phase of growth.”
