Regensburg, November 21, 2023 – BMW’s Regensburg plant has quietly become a powerhouse of automotive production, reaching a cumulative total of approximately 8.7 million vehicles since 1986. That makes it the German automaker’s largest factory in Europe by volume, and a key player in the shift toward electric vehicles.
A Legacy of Growth and Innovation
The regensburg plant’s success story is one of exceeding expectations and embracing technological advancements.
Currently, the plant focuses on manufacturing the X1 and X2 SUVs, alongside their fully electric counterparts, the iX1 and iX2. BMW operates ten facilities across Germany, with Regensburg being one of four dedicated too automobile production, alongside sites in Munich, Dingolfing, and Leipzig.
The plant is on the cusp of another milestone: its nine millionth vehicle. While officially inaugurated in November 1986, the first Series 3 E30 rolled off the assembly line a month earlier, in October, marking the beginning of a remarkable industrial journey.
Today, the Regensburg plant boasts a workforce of 3,500 employees.
A key factor in this success has been the plant’s commitment to technological evolution. Digitalization efforts began just a year after opening, in 1987, and now advanced automation and artificial intelligence systems manage a notable portion of industrial operations. This transformation has improved efficiency, optimized production flows, and maintained high quality standards.
Global Impact and Future Outlook
While Regensburg is BMW’s largest European plant, the company’s largest global facility is located in Spartanburg, United States, producing close to 400,000 vehicles annually. Both plants played a crucial role in the BMW Group’s overall performance in 2025, when the BMW, Mini, and Rolls-Royce brands collectively achieved a sales volume of approximately 2.45 million vehicles.
