The BNDES (National Bank for Economic and Social Development) announces this Friday (13) that there is a funding approval of R$500 million to expand the production capacity of FS, a company in the corn ethanol sector in Mato Grosso.

According to the bank, the source of the resources is the Climate Fund, administered by the development institution.

FS has a growth plan, says BNDES, focused on Mato Grosso. The company has units in the municipal areas of Lucas do Rio Verde, Sorriso and Primavera do Leste and is expected to establish a new operation in Querência (about 760 km from Cuiabá).

“The Querência region has an established corn production capacity with a lot of growth potential”, said FS CEO, Rafael Abud.

According to him, the location makes it possible to create a logistics strategy to distribute goods to different parts of the state and in the North and North East of the country.

The company currently has the capacity to produce approximately 2.3 billion liters of ethanol per year. It also has technology to manufacture animal nutrition products known by the acronym DDG.

The Climate Fund, created in 2009, is linked to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change. BNDES acts as manager of the implementation of reimbursable resources.

With increased capacity this year, the fund has up to R$10.4 billion to finance projects in the public sector, private companies and the third sector.

Fuels such as corn ethanol are seen as promising for the energy transition in Brazil. In the opinion of the director of Productive Development, Innovation and Foreign Trade at BNDES, José Luis Gordon, the growth in the supply of products is fundamental to guarantee the supply of ethanol in the country.

In an interview with Leaflet in July, Gordon indicated that the bank’s credit approval for projects in the field of biofuels tends to grow again in 2024, influenced by the expansion of resources from the Climate Fund.

“Brazil’s decarbonisation is a pillar of the Greater Production Plan [do governo federal] and has huge potential in the biofuels sector”, said the director in a note about the R$500 million funding for the FS.

“It is a strategic differentiator for Brazil, and companies can rely on the New Climate Fund to support green industry and technological development aimed at a balanced ecological transition,” he said.

Also in a note, the president of BNDES, Aloizio Mercadante, declared that the “complementarity” between the New PAC (Growth Acceleration Program), Nova Indústria Brasil and the Lula government’s Ecological Transformation Plan (PT) allowed efforts to focus “i. direction of development, with improvements to infrastructure, acceleration of the energy transition, decarbonisation and neo-industrialisation”.

“This project [financiamento da FS] It is an example of the synergy of these three public policies and the importance of BNDES, which has been a decisive credit agent”, said Mercadante.

In recent statements, the president of the bank defended the idea that the energy transition depends on public resources and cannot be limited to loans in the private sector.

“If we simply leave it to market forces and the lowest cost, we will continue to emit carbon dioxide, warming the planet,” Mercadante said in April.

In the year 2024, there is a boom in fires in Brazil whose effects can be seen and felt in the air in some regions of the country, but the current measures of the federal government do not meet what is necessary to combat the problem, according to a report published by Leaflet this week.

The fire crisis occurs amid the worst drought ever recorded in the country since the beginning of the current historical series, in 1950, according to Cemaden (National Center for Monitoring and Warning of Natural Disasters).

Despite the budgetary and structural increase in relation to the administration of Jair Bolsonaro, which led to the dismantling of the sector, the actions of the Lula government require stronger prioritization and organization than presented so far, as well as the mobilization of states, municipalities and Congress , experts say.
