Myron Boadu Seeks Revival at PSV After Turbulent Career Path
PSV Eindhoven is offering Myron Boadu a crucial opportunity to reignite his career, prompting questions about whether the 24-year-old striker can recapture the goal-scoring form he displayed earlier in his career at AZ Alkmaar. After a mixed spell in Germany, Boadu arrives in Eindhoven with a point to prove.
Boadu expressed his gratitude and excitement upon his arrival at PSV, describing the move as an “honor” and eagerly anticipating the chance to showcase his abilities with the national champion. He could make his debut tonight in the away match against NEC at 6:45 pm, though PSV coach Peter Bosz indicated he isn’t yet fit for a full game, alongside competitor Ricardo Pepi.
Bosz has been impressed with Boadu’s commitment since his arrival, stating on Thursday that the striker “has been training for two weeks now and takes good steps very quickly.” This positive assessment signals a willingness to integrate Boadu into the squad immediately.
The Amsterdam native’s journey to PSV has been anything but straightforward. A high-profile transfer to AS Monaco in 2021, valued at around 17 million euros, failed to deliver on expectations, hampered by injuries and strong competition. Subsequent loan spells at FC Twente and VFL Bochum followed, representing a search for consistent playing time and a return to form.
Last season with Bochum, Boadu demonstrated flashes of his potential, scoring nine goals in 19 Bundesliga appearances – a rate of one goal every 116 minutes. This performance placed him among the league’s most efficient goalscorers, trailing only Patrik Schick (Bayer Leverkusen), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), and Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt) in minutes per goal. He also previously scored five Eredivisie goals during his time at AZ. These statistics were undoubtedly a key factor in PSV’s decision to pursue him as a replacement for the injured Alassane Pléa in August.
However, Boadu’s time at Bochum wasn’t without its challenges. In January 2025, then-trainer Dieter Hecking publicly criticized Boadu’s training intensity and overall performance, stating, “He is not physically from Bundesliga level.” The criticism initially spurred Boadu to respond emphatically, scoring a hat trick against RB Leipzig on January 18. “The last few weeks were not that easy for me,” Boadu acknowledged, admitting to a tense relationship with Hecking, “He was a bit angry, I was a bit angry.”
Despite the goalscoring response, the relationship remained strained, culminating in Hecking’s decision to exclude Boadu from the squad for a match against FC Augsburg in April due to continued concerns about his training commitment. According to Erik Meijer, a Bundesliga connoisseur and former pro, “No matter how talented you are, in Germany they just don’t like it when you walk the edges.” Meijer added that while Boadu’s goal tally was respectable, “it might have been a success, but not if you look at the total picture.”
His experience at AS Monaco mirrored the difficulties encountered in Germany. A crowded attacking lineup featuring established players like Wissam Ben Yedder and Kevin Volland limited Boadu’s opportunities. “He had a hard time, because at the time Monaco had two experienced strikers,” explained football journalist Jurrian van Wessem, who resides in Monaco. Boadu ultimately appeared in 68 matches for Monaco, scoring 10 goals. Van Wessem noted that Boadu “has also just been a bit unhappy” and that while he showed promise, he often “disappointed Monaco.” He also frequently socialized with former teammates Pablo Rosario, Calvin Stengs, and Justin Kluivert in Nice, which may have hindered his full integration at Monaco.
Fans can follow the match between PSV and NEC tonight, starting at 6:45 pm, via a live blog on NOS.nl and the NOS app, as well as on NPO Radio 1. A summary of the game will be available shortly after the final whistle, with a full broadcast scheduled for 10:30 pm on NPO 1.
Whether Boadu can overcome the obstacles that have defined his recent career and flourish at PSV remains to be seen, but the opportunity is undeniably present for a fresh start and a return to the prolific form that once marked him as a rising star.
