At least a person has dead and eleven others have been injured when a tourist boat overturned this Monday near Niagara Falls, on the Erie Canal, an artificial route that connects Lake Erie with the Hudson River and the Atlantic Ocean.

The Lockport Police Department has explained that “units responded and immediately began water rescue efforts to bring 27 passengers and one employee to safety.” “One of the passengers could not be saved following rescue efforts by on-site teams and was pronounced dead at the scene,” a Lockport Police statement read.

The Lockport Fire Chief, Luca Quagliano, explained in a press conference that the boat became unbalanced and overturned, throwing everyone into the water. So a 60-year-old man was trapped under the boat and diedas collected by CNN.

Emergency teams have rescued 16 people, while the rest made it out of the water safely. Eleven people have been taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries, including a broken arm or possible head injury, the Lockport Fire Marshal said.

Quagliano has indicated that the boat could safely carry 40 people and that no one had a life jacket when the boat overturned, although he has remarked that he does not know if it was mandatory to use them in these conditions.

Lockport Mayor Michelle Roman has stated that the cave tour has been in operation since the mid-1970s without incident.

A company advertises this tour as “the longest underground journey in USA” in which passengers enjoy a “quiet” ride while “the boat slides through the static waters illuminated only by sporadically placed electric lights.” The cave maintains a temperature of 12ºC all year round.
