Boat Runs Aground Outside Torslanda, Captain Suspected of Maritime Law Violation

At 4 pm on Tuesday, a leisure boat of a larger model ran aground outside Torslanda. The boat’s captain is now suspected of violating maritime laws. The Coast Guard, however, is not revealing whether the captain is suspected of being intoxicated, citing the confidentiality of preliminary investigations. The nationality of the captain is also being withheld.

The boat, which is flagged in the British Virgin Islands, is still stranded as of 22:30. It contains an estimated 2,000 liters of diesel fuel, leading the Coast Guard to conduct on-site environmental rescue and investigation. Erik, an officer on duty at the Coast Guard, mentioned that if there is any oil in the water, they will take necessary steps to address it as it can be considered a crime. Erik did not provide his last name.

The boat was reportedly heading out into the archipelago based on its course. The number of people on board remains unknown, according to Erik.

As for the captain’s whereabouts, Erik stated that the captain is either onboard with the Coast Guard or on his own boat. The captain is expected to represent himself and the owner during the salvage operation. The owner of the boat, through their insurance company, has arranged for two vessels to assist in pulling the boat into the quay tonight.

Erik emphasized that the Coast Guard does not consider the situation to be an imminent risk that requires their intervention. It is ultimately the owner’s responsibility to remove the boat from its current location. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported in connection with the grounding.
