Legendary musician Bob Dylan has expressed his grief over the death of Robbie Robertson, his close companion and former lead guitarist of The Band. Robertson, aged 80, passed away, leaving the music industry and fans worldwide in mourning. Dylan shared his heartfelt sentiments, stating, “his passing leaves a vacancy in the world.”

Robertson, who was born in Canada, initially joined Dylan’s backing band, known as the Hawks, in the mid-1960s. As the lead guitarist, he played an instrumental role in shaping the sound and success of the group. Later renamed The Band, they became a prominent and highly acclaimed force in popular music during the 1960s and 70s.

Recognized for penning several timeless tracks, Robertson co-wrote iconic songs such as “The Weight,” “Up On Cripple Creek,” and “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down.” These compositions showcased his exceptional talent as both a musician and songwriter.

Dylan, in a statement posted on his Twitter account, now rebranded to X, expressed shock at the news of Robertson’s passing. He referred to Robertson as a “lifelong friend,” emphasizing the significant void left behind by his departure.

The Band, which consisted of Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson, and Robertson, contributed immensely to the music landscape. Among their noteworthy achievements were critically acclaimed albums like 1968’s “Music From Big Pink” and their self-titled 1969 release, “The Band.”

Their collaboration with Dylan extended beyond their individual success. The Band appeared on Dylan’s 1974 album, “Planet Waves,” as well as his 1975 record, “The Basement Tapes.” In a momentous event, The Band hosted a farewell concert at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in 1976, featuring a star-studded lineup including Dylan, Van Morrison, Neil Young, and Muddy Waters. Filmmaker Martin Scorsese documented the concert, resulting in the renowned 1978 documentary, “The Last Waltz.”

Robertson’s musical contributions extended beyond his work with The Band. He lent his talent to several of Scorsese’s films, including “The Color Of Money,” “The King Of Comedy,” “The Departed,” and “The Irishman.”

In response to Robertson’s passing, Rolling Stones rocker Ronnie Wood shared images from “The Last Waltz,” the rock documentary in which both he and Robertson featured. Wood mournfully wrote, “Such sad news about Robbie Robertson – he was a lovely man, a great friend, and will be dearly missed xx R.”

Another artist deeply affected by the loss, Neil Diamond, produced Robertson’s album “Beautiful Noise.” He expressed his fondness for Robertson and the impact he made in the music world, saying, “The music world lost a great one with the passing of Robbie Robertson. Keep making that Beautiful Noise in the sky, Robbie. I’ll miss you.”

In recognition of their influential and enduring contributions, The Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.

Robertson’s publicist, Ray Costa, confirmed that the talented musician passed away in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family, following a long illness. His legacy as a revered guitarist, songwriter, and collaborator will forever reside in the hearts of fans and fellow musicians alike, ensuring his spirit lives on through his music.
