BELLUNO. The lifeless bodies of two climbers from Treviso, who had fallen yesterday from the south face of the Marmolada, where they were climbing the Don Chisciotte route, were recovered by the “Falco 2” helicopter.

The Val Pettorina Alpine Rescue was activated yesterday evening at around 11.20pm by the Suem 118 Central, alerted by the wife of one of the two, to whom she had sent a message without receiving a response around 2pm.

Having found the cars, one parked at Malga Ciapela from where they had climbed up to the Falier Refuge, and one at the Fedaia Pass, where they would have arrived by descending from the glacier once the route was completed, the rescuers went up to Malga Ombretta, to the south and along the ice on the north face, to see if the two climbers were late, but without success.

At 5:30 this morning a team went up to the Falier Refuge to observe the wall with binoculars, without seeing them. Falco 2 then took off from Belluno, which immediately headed towards the scree at the base of the wall, finding the lifeless bodies. Once the death was confirmed, the bodies were recovered and transported to the mortuary in Rocca Pietore (Belluno).

According to initial reports, the two climbers, who left yesterday at 4.30 from the Falier Refuge to attack the route, may have fallen already on the first pitches.
