A Korean male tourist in his 30s was found dead in a reservoir in Pattaya, a famous resort in Thailand. The man’s body was placed in a drum filled with cement and then dumped in a reservoir. Thai police authorities are tracking three Korean suspects, believing it to be a case of kidnapping and murder for ransom.
According to Thai local media outlet Kao Sot on the 11th (local time), local police discovered the body of a Korean male tourist inside a black plastic drum filled with cement at the Map Prachan Reservoir in Pattaya this afternoon. This man is known to be Noh (34), a Korean tourist who entered Thailand on the 30th of last month.
According to the local police, Mr. Noh’s mother received a threatening phone call from a gunman on the 7th of this month, saying, “If you want to save your son, bring 3 million baht (approximately 112 million won) because your son has caused damage by throwing away drugs.” received. Mr. Noh’s mother immediately reported it to the Korean Embassy in Thailand, saying, “I think her son has been kidnapped,” and the embassy requested cooperation from the Thai police.
Local police immediately began an investigation. According to local police, Mr. Noh had a Thai wife. He stated, “I last saw Mr. Noh at a bar in the Huai Quang area of Thailand on the 2nd.” The Huay Quang area is about an hour and 50 minutes away by car from Pattaya, where Mr. Noh was found.
Based on this statement, the police obtained and analyzed closed-circuit (CC) TV footage near the bar, and found that at around 2 a.m. on the 3rd, two Korean men drove Mr. Noh into a rental car and headed to Pattaya. When they arrived in Pattaya, they transferred to a pickup truck and rented accommodation near Pattaya Reservoir.
A group of kidnappers left the lodgings around 9 p.m. on the 4th with a black object in the luggage compartment. According to CCTV footage, the kidnappers bought a black plastic drum and rope at a store, stayed near the reservoir for about an hour, and then returned to their lodgings. Suspicious of this, the local police dispatched divers to search the reservoir on the 11th, and as a result discovered a drum containing a body believed to be Mr. Noh.
Local police identified three Korean suspects through CCTV analysis results and confirmed that one of them left the country on the 9th. The whereabouts of the remaining two people, who appear to be still in Thailand, are being traced.
The Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on the 12th, saying, “The local embassy has been providing necessary consular assistance immediately after becoming aware of the incident,” and added, “We have supported the victim’s family and requested a quick and thorough investigation from the local police.”
