Deputy wants to put rules on streamings

O bolsonarista deputy
Pastor Gil (PL-MA) presented a bill this Wednesday (24) which aims to oblige Netflix
and other streaming platforms showing federal government texts and campaigns. If the document has the support of the National Congress, companies may be suspended from the country.

According to the PL filed in the Chamber, video streaming platforms on the internet must display educational campaigns to combat school violence, domestic violence and other forms of violence. The aim of the project is to make subscribers aware, especially children and young people.

Companies will have to put in their catalogs campaigns developed by the federal government that aim to prevent and combat violence. They will have to “ensure that educational campaigns are broadcast free of charge and at times and formats that reach the target audience, according to criteria established by regulation”.

If the platforms do not follow the law, if it is approved, they will suffer penalties. The first punishment is a fine. The second condemnation is temporary suspension of activities. Finally, the streams
may have their activities permanently suspended.

“Violence, in its various forms, is a problem that affects society as a whole, especially children and young people, who are in the process of forming values and perceptions about the world. The consequences of violence for this public are numerous, affecting physical and mental health, school performance, family life and socio-emotional development”, argues the deputy.

“Streaming platforms have proven to be one of the most efficient means of communication today, reaching millions of people, especially children and young people. Therefore, it is essential to take advantage of the potential of these media to broadcast educational campaigns, contributing to the formation of a more aware and just society”, he adds.

Which platforms fall under the law?

In addition to Netflix, the project mentions YouTube, TikTok and Facebook. Also treated as streaming platforms are Prime Video, HBO Max, Starplus, Paramount +, AppleTV +, among others.

“It is important to emphasize that this Bill is not intended to regulate or control social networks, nor to interfere with their autonomy, but rather to use the wide reach they have among children and young people to promote awareness of relevant and urgent issues”, concludes.

There is no forecast for Congress to vote on the bill.
