President Lula

The 2024 municipal elections are underway, and the Bolsonaro supporters are also developing a plan to defeat the public machine of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and elect more mayors aligned with Jair Bolsonaro (PL) than the current president. The strategy consists of using the veto that the federal government intends to apply to the law that prohibits “dating”.

Recently, it was reported that Lula has already expressed his intention to veto the law. The government has no intention of sanctioning the proposal that calls for a ban on “outings” for prisoners.

The Bill is advanced in the National Congress, and the tendency is for it to be approved without difficulties. The veto is a consensus between the president and the current Minister of Justice, Ricardo Lewandowski, both believing that the mechanism is beneficial for the prisoner’s reintegration into society.

Given the sensitivity of the topic, Bolsonarists celebrate Lula’s intention. Although all opposition congressmen and those aligned with Jair Bolsonaro have embraced the cause of the Bill, they see the veto as an opportunity for political bargaining.

Internal research indicates that the Lula factor could influence municipal elections, and the center-left is growing, something that the opposition wants to avoid.

The PL party seeks to elect a thousand mayors, while the extreme right works to have the majority of mayors elected in Brazilian municipalities and also command municipal councils.

All research, however, indicates that the task will not be easy, as Lula’s supporters are growing in various regions of Brazil in their pre-candidacies.

The tendency is for the PT and other allied parties, such as PSB, Rede and other acronyms more aligned with the Center, to grow during the electoral period, mainly in the Northeast and other specific regions. However, the far right seeks to prevent the growth of the left in strategic regions, especially in the Southeast and Midwest.

The public security agenda is considered relevant to part of the voters, being the topic of greatest concern for Brazilians, who support the end of “saidinhas” because they feel a sense of impunity. This is the point that the Bolsonarists intend to attack during the electoral period, if Lula’s veto is confirmed.

The political class seeks to sell the idea that the president’s allies support criminals and cannot hold positions as mayors and councilors. Even with this risk, internally in Planalto, there is no climate for the law to be sanctioned, and Lula is determined to stop it.
