Deputy Dr Luizinho (PP-RJ)
The PP defined, in a meeting this Tuesday (12), that deputy Doutor Luizinho will be the new leader of the party in the Chamber of Deputies. He will assume the position after the departure of André Fufuca, who accepted the appointment as Minister of Sports in the government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT). Luizinho’s choice was unanimous among PP parliamentarians.
Doctor Luizinho, who is a doctor by profession, is also known for his pre-candidacy for mayor of Rio de Janeiro and for his political orientation aligned with “Bolsonarism”. The deputy returns to the Chamber after having been on leave since the beginning of his term.
Luizinho’s appointment to lead the PP in the Chamber was called by André Fufuca, who did not face any opponents in the dispute. His dismissal from the position of Health Secretary of the State of Rio de Janeiro, which he held under the management of Cláudio Castro (PL-RJ), was registered on the same day that his choice as party leader in the Chamber was confirmed.
It is important to highlight that even after leaving the position of Secretary of Health, Doctor Luizinho managed to maintain his appointments in positions of trust in the department and appointed Cláudia Mello to replace him.
The decision to return to the Chamber and lead the PP was motivated by requests from Senator Ciro Nogueira and Representative Arthur Lira, who sought to strengthen the government bench in Congress. However, Luizinho’s appointment as party leader generated internal divisions within the PP’s governing base.
While some members of the government base chose not to oppose Luizinho’s choice, in order to avoid internal conflicts and wear and tear, Lula’s allies who are part of the PP expressed dissatisfaction with the doctor’s appointment, according to the newspaper O Globo.
There are differences in the acronym, with a wing of progressive deputies defending a closer relationship with the government, arguing that Fufuca’s appointment as minister should be accompanied by greater harmony between the party and the Executive. The appointment of Doctor Luizinho is seen by some as a strategy to keep the PP aligned with independence, instead of completely aligning itself with the Lula government.
