Jair Bolsonaro, former president of Brazil

Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) defended this Thursday (12) the defendants for the anti-democratic attacks on January 8 and classified the convictions as ‘unfair’. The statement was made during an event against abortion in Chapecó (SC).

According to Bolsonaro, the penalties imposed by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) were severe and he hoped that the accused would be acquitted ‘soon’. He also stated that the scenario for the suspects in the attacks would be different if he were president of the country.

“If we want to live in a democracy, respect the law and due legal process and individualize each person’s conduct. And not by wanting to do justice, commit a great injustice. I want to tell you that if I had continued as President, all this would not have happened,” he declared.

“We regret what happened. We hope this will be resolved soon and these people will be free. And those who were sentenced to 17 years in prison should also be released from that sentence,” he added.

In recent months, the STF has mobilized to try defendants who participated in the January 8 attacks in Brasília. In total, six people suspected of participating in the acts have already been convicted. Penalties vary between 12 and 17 years in prison.

Two cases judged by the Supreme Court must be analyzed in a physical plenary session, following a prominent request from Minister André Mendonça. There is still no date for the resumption of the trial.

Bolsonaro also remembered the war in Israel and showed solidarity with the country led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“In this quick visit here, I express my solidarity with all the people of Santa Catarina because of the rains, and to the State of Israel, because of the war”, he declared.
