Lieutenant Colonel Mauro Cid increased the pressure on the Armed Forces by stating in his statement to the Federal Police that the then president Jair Bolsonaro submitted to high military commanders a draft decree to carry out a coup after the second round of the 2022 elections. The information has generated wear and tear in the institution by implicating former bosses in the investigation.
The repercussions have led to statements from the Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, and from the armies and the Navy. Múcio declared that he felt uncomfortable with the ‘atmosphere of collective suspicion’ that persists.
The Navy said that it did not have access to the statement and that it does not comment on ongoing investigation processes, and the army, for its part, has expressed itself along the same lines and has not made any comments.
Bolsonaro’s defense stated that he did not support actions without legal support and that he will take legal measures against possible slander expressed in the statement.
Cid’s defense maintains that ‘the aforementioned testimonies are confidential, and for that same reason it does not confirm their content.'”
