Bolzano, tent city cleared: in via Trento there is now a stone wall – News

BOLZANO. A sort of “wall” made of a hundred stones now covers the area of Viale Trento under the highway viaduct. The intervention was carried out by the municipal police together with the A22, which has jurisdiction over that small portion of the city. The goal? To remove the possibility of creating new illegal encampments in a place that has been cleared several times in recent years. What should be the definitive intervention was carried out last week.

The area was occupied by seven foreigners who were persuaded with difficulty, after several minutes, to abandon the tent city. Initially, a gate was installed to delimit access to the area. Then the operation began. Glass bottles, syringes, knives, several garbage bags and abandoned bicycles are what was found in the place occupied by the homeless: it was in an obvious state of degradation when the police arrived. Once the area was completely cleaned, some trucks transported large rocks that were positioned with an excavator to prevent the presence of new camps.

The work was carried out by the same company Autostrada del Brennero Spa, which is responsible for the area. “It is an activity that we carry out almost daily in various parts of the city”, commented the commander of the Municipal Police, Fabrizio Piras, “We recently also intervened for an eviction on the Talvera and in the Firmian area. We are moving a lot to give a timely response in terms of safety, also thanks to the reports from citizens which are always important”.

Along the embankment, all the makeshift bivouacs created inside the pylons of the highway overpass had already been eliminated. Autobrennero had begun work a few years ago to close some of the cavities with concrete cubes. In 2022, the workers returned, completing the work along the stretch of the embankment between the roundabout on Via Roma and Ponte Resia. The intervention, like those carried out in the past on the pylons, is causing controversy. “A city increasingly hostile towards marginalization, increasingly open to wealthy tourists”, we read in a post by the “Bozen Solidale” association, “We must commit ourselves every day, to the very end, to fight these racist and xenophobic monstrosities”
