This book, conceived as a tool to explore the difficult process of grief from the perspective of children, is emerging as a comforting guide for those adults facing the loss of a loved one at home.

This work represents the second literary work of Ovalle, who in 2021 published his debut work “Fotogramas del Canon en Espiral”, a collection of existentialist stories about the “parallelisms of human life with the idiosyncrasies of nature.” You can learn more about his work through his Instagram page @viggo_baggins.

About the book

“Lights and Ghosts” immerses readers in the life of Raúl, a mischievous and playful boy, whose routine is transformed by the arrival of a mysterious being who will teach him a valuable life lesson.

Through the relationship between Raúl and his beloved pets, the author sensitively and movingly addresses the complexity of childhood grief.

Ovalle himself explains that, despite the difficulty that the loss of a loved one represents for a child, tenderness and patience are essential to help them heal this misunderstood pain at their young age.

The book arises from the author’s deep desire to offer emotional support to children who face the absence of a loved one and has its origin in the “feeling of three very special children at the moment they lost a very important person for them, their granny”.

The text is accompanied by illustrations by Mónica Santillana, who manages to masterfully capture the essence of the characters and accompany the reader through an emotional journey full of color and dynamism.

Santillana is a Guatemalan illustrator, visual artist and storyteller who has collaborated on animation projects and illustrated books. Throughout her career she has received international recognition, such as a selection and exhibition in the 9th. BID Meeting on Teaching and Design in Spain and two selections in the International Festivals of Argentina (ANIMA, 2022) and Los Angeles, USA (LALIFF, 2023).
