Why is it so difficult to book or even find international train connections? We have a few answers to this question

So let’s take a trip from Amsterdam to Lisbon, from capital to capital. No matter which train search engine, whether the Navigator from Deutsche Bahn, Trainline or Rail Europe, you simply won’t get a connection. “It actually goes further,” says Gregor Kolbe from the consumer advice center, “even if they are shown a connection and a price, they don’t know whether it is the complete offer or whether there are faster or cheaper connections.”

The problem is that the booking systems of European rail providers are not compatible and information is not shared with everyone. That’s why when traveling internationally you always have to search on the Deutsche Bahn website and on the website of the destination country’s railway. Both do not access the same seats, but each sells half of them. That’s why there may still be free seats or saver tickets on the French, Polish or Danish railway websites that are sold out on the Deutsche Bahn website.
