Naomi Klein is back: after having mapped and documented political and cultural developments in the last 25 years with a series of corrosive bestsellers – from No Logo to Shock Economy and The world in flames – revealing the effects of the excessive power of the big brands, of austerity and of the savage exploitation of natural resources the Canadian author takes to bookstores ‘Sosia’ – published by Nave di Teseo in the series I Fari (pp. 512, 22 euros) on 19 September in contemporary worldwide. An analysis with which Klein “advances into the depths of what is called the Mirror World, the “second world” of social platforms: populated by doubles and immersed in chaos, in which far-right movements pretend full solidarity with the working classes, AI-generated content blurs the lines between authentic and artifact, New Age wellness gurus devoted to No Vax propaganda reshuffle the cards of political affiliations; and into which many of us project our meticulously curated digital avatars.
The original title – ‘Doppelgänger’, a word which in German can be translated precisely with double, evil twin – is significant given that – explains the author – this book “shows what it feels like to see one’s identity dissolve in the digital ether, an experience that many of us will probably live very soon in the age of AI It is above all an attempt to come to terms with the madness of the present, with the wave of conspiracy and with the emergence of strange cross-party alliances in a scenario in which no one is what they seem anymore. In Sosia I tried to draw a map to orient us in this historical moment; and to succeed, I had to get lost more than once”.
Naomi Klein begins this intellectual adventure of hers struggling with her double: an author of views antithetical to hers but similar in name and public figure to the point of giving rise to a very frequent person exchange in social communities; from here, the author looks at our psychic landscapes and at the set of economic, environmental, health and political crises of our current world.
