“Pinche” by Daniel Rafecas. Planet, 248 pages, $22,900.
A federal judge does not usually leave the obscurity of the files to indulge in fiction, especially considering the nature of his work is based on real events. But Daniel Rafecas is eager to take that leap and he does so with a crime novel as effective as it is exciting, which reveals an amazing knowledge of the subject: seven dead, drug trafficking, a mole and a child, an enthusiastic reader of police stories, who works click in the court and seeks to reveal the mystery. It is clear that Rafecas’ 20 years at Comodoro Py help to tell the secrets hidden in the most complex judicial investigations, with a cinematic rhythm. “Pinche” translates the tradition of the detective novel into a real-life plot, which could be recognized in a top news program. Any resemblance to reality is pure coincidence.
“Biography X by Catherine Lacey. Alfaguara, 456 pages, $32,499.
She is not yet 40 years old and she is already one of the most surprising writers in North American literature at the moment. Catherine Lacey is almost unknown among us, although “Biography of X”, recently published, is her fourth novel. Like his previous books, this last one is considered one of the best of 2023 by the main media in his country.
It is a complex and interesting “artifact”. In the dystopian United States, divided into 3 territories, one of which is almost a copy of Gilead Margaret Atwood, a diverse and mysterious artist died and his wife, a journalist, tried to write his biography. But the world of Lacey’s main effort is to create an imaginary world in which a character with real freedom can be introduced.
Horrific and delirious, this novel is unlike anything we’ve read recently. You can love it or hate it but it will never be boring.
“Icons of Argentina” by Laura Malosetti. Economic Culture Fund, 112 pages, $6,900.
There are images that trigger a multitude of thoughts and associations just by looking at them. This symbolic charge deepens when it comes to portraits of historical figures or popular idols. That is the case of Evita, Che, Diego and Lionel, the four characters that Malosetti analyzes in this little book. The author, a prominent specialist in Argentine painting, has already explored the subject in a very interesting text, “Public Portraits” (FCE). He then reviewed the importance of the images that fundamental heroes such as San Martín and Belgrano achieved in the next life. In this volume, those analyzed are modern figures, involved in politics and sports. In the case of Maradona and Messi, their gestures “came to occupy a place in the collective memory and inspired ancient heroic models,” the author explains.

“Berliner” by Gustavo Sierra. Tide, 200 pages, $18,900.
“The Avenger of Treblinka” is the subtitle of this book which tells the life of the man who was able to face the power of Germany in the famous concentration camp. Meir Berliner was born in Poland but lived part of his life in Argentina. Investigation by journalist Gustavo Sierra, in novel format.
“The natural idea” by María Negroni. Cliff, 208 pages, $21,500.
Each era designs a different discourse about nature. It is that perspective in words that María Negroni brings together in this volume, reviewing the ideas of authors of different times, from Lucretius to Clarice Lispector. The edition of the beautiful Spanish label Acantilado is also worth mentioning.
