A new study published in Frontiers in Neuroscience suggests that using essential oils and a diffuser can boost memory in older adults. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of California Irvine Center for the Neurobiology of Learning & Memory, provided diffusers and aromatic natural oils to older adults between the ages of 60 and 85. The participants who slept with the fragrance emitted by the diffuser experienced a 226% boost in cognitive performance compared to those who used a placebo cartridge. Additionally, participants who had the full fragrance reported better sleep quality. The study also showed improved integrity in a brain pathway associated with memory and cognition. The findings suggest that using aroma therapy may provide a noninvasive way to strengthen memory and potentially prevent dementia.

Childhood Trauma Linked to Lifelong Health Challenges

New research from the University of California San Francisco reveals that childhood trauma or adversity can have long-lasting impacts on health. Adverse early-life experiences, such as exposure to violence or abuse, severe illness, family financial struggles, and parental separation, were found to be associated with both physical and cognitive impairments later in life. The study, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, found that individuals who experienced violence in childhood were 40% more likely to have mobility impairments and 80% more likely to have difficulty performing daily activities. Furthermore, those from unhappy families were 40% more likely to have at least mild cognitive impairment. The findings highlight the importance of addressing childhood trauma to prevent future health challenges.

Pecans May Help Prevent Obesity and Related Health Issues

A study conducted by Texas A&M AgriLife scientists suggests that consuming pecans daily can prevent obesity and related health issues, such as fatty liver disease and diabetes. The study, published in the journal MDPI, found that pecans increased energy expenditure and improved inflammation and gut microbial imbalance, which can lead to symptoms like chronic fatigue and bloating. The researchers used mouse models to demonstrate that pecans can help maintain a healthy body weight and prevent diabetes, even when consumed as part of a high-fat diet. Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, the principal investigator of the study, referred to pecans as a “healthy tool” that consumers have at their disposal.
