During the European Football Championship, there were stricter border controls at all German land borders. Now the Olympic Games are coming up in France – and this too has consequences at German borders.
Travelers to France must prepare for border controls in air and road traffic because of the Olympic Games in Paris. Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) ordered temporary controls at the German border with the neighboring country starting today. There will also be border controls in air traffic.
The measure applies from July 20 to September 30, a ministry spokesperson said. It also covers the Paralympic Games, which will also be held in Paris. The German steps are closely coordinated with the security measures in France.
In recent weeks, checks had already been carried out at the border with France – temporary checks were ordered at all German internal borders in the course of the European Football Championship. However, this measure ended on Friday. As of today, instead of stationary border controls, the usual undercover searches with targeted checks in the border regions will be carried out at the Schengen internal borders with Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Stationary controls have been in place for some time at the land borders with Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland. These will continue to be in place to limit irregular migration and combat people smuggling. They are currently limited to December 15 for Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Poland and to November 11 for Austria.
