(ANSA) – TRIESTE, 05 AUG – What impact have the 60 years of ICTP had on the territory and on the research system born from its roots? “ICTP was founded in 1964 in Trieste, a city close to the Iron Curtain in those years to promote scientific collaboration between East and West – explains Borean, who defines the establishment of ICTP in 1964 as “a far-sighted choice”. Since then “research and study centres have multiplied: today their density in the Trieste area is striking, which includes – I will mention a few – SISSA, University, ICGEB, Research Area. Over the years, interaction with other countries, with other research institutes, and the arrival of new foreign professors and researchers, has significantly contributed to the flourishing of new fields of investigation. Today it is also a physical space to facilitate cultural ‘contamination’ between the world of research and, for example, business. Its role, compared to its origins, has evolved while maintaining its vocation for dialogue and welcoming the challenges of contemporaneity”.
Over the years, 107 Nobel Prizes have been awarded to the ICPT. An impressive figure that Fvg and perhaps Italy are not aware of.
“ICTP is due to the efforts of two enlightened scientists, the Nobel Prize winner of Pakistani origin Abdus Salam and the Trieste native Paolo Budinich, with the blessing of Robert J. Oppenheimer – Borean replies – It has been and is both a meeting place for Nobel Prize winners and a pioneer of scientific diplomacy. It is no coincidence that it is a UNESCO institute: the hope is that their collaboration will promote the search for knowledge as a tool for peace and global understanding. The privilege of having such fertile realities in the territory, present in the global scientific debate, and the opportunity for dialogue must be cultivated with constant care through targeted routes. An effort is required from everyone”. Generali’s GCFO cites the “Data Science & Artificial Intelligence Institute, established by Generali and research institutions in the FVG region (SISSA, University of Trieste, University of Udine, ICTP, MIB Trieste School of Management) in 2021. It was created within the Generali Academy in response to the need for new big data and artificial intelligence professionals trained in synergy with the industrial world, to identify business opportunities with science, from startups to large groups. It is an example of a public-private partnership that leverages the excellence of the territory, with mutual benefits. We are very pleased to be part of this reality and we hope for its evolution”.
