Boric calls for a political “truce” to focus on the security problems plaguing Chile

MADRID, 7 Abr. (EUROPA PRESS) –

The President of Chile, Gabriel Boric, has called on the different political formations to initiate a kind of “truce” that allows the Executive to focus on the security problems that plague the country, in which in less than a month they have died three policemen during the exercise of their functions.

The Chilean president summoned the political parties present in Parliament last night to address the complex situation that the country is going through and to ask them to cease reproaches and to allow the security and well-being of citizens to be placed at the center of the debate, as collects the Chilean newspaper ‘La Tercera’.

Boric has thus asked his political adversaries to face this issue with a State perspective, leaving aside the disqualifications and mistrust of his Executive; at the same time that he urged a debate in good faith, to recognize the successes and put aside the advantages.

“The president called for a truce, to understand that we can (…) start working on those aspects that are effective in the elements that need to be repaired, that we can scratch where it itches and not just fall into grandiose phrases, in attack the one in charge, in a war of wedges”, reported the government spokesperson, Camila Vallejo.

In Vallejo’s words, it is essential that the political class now demonstrate that it is “responsible” with a citizenry that demands that it “live up to the circumstances.” All the parties present at the meeting with Boric –Independent Democratic Union, Communist Party, Democrats and Christian Democracy– were in favor of initiating the “truce” demanded by the Government.

A total of three Carabineros agents have died during the exercise of their duties in the last month, a national security crisis that has led Parliament to approve a measure — ratified on Thursday by Boric — to increase the powers of the Police .
