Jannik Sinner has replaced Novak Djoković as number one in the tennis world. He has now been honored for this – by Boris Becker. The German predicts a rosy future for Sinner.
At the end of the year, three-time Wimbledon winner Boris Becker honored Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner for his first rise to number one in the world rankings. The 23-year-old Sinner replaced the Serbian record Grand Slam tournament winner Novak Djoković in June and took over the top spot for the first time. In an outstanding season, the South Tyrolean won both the Australian Open and the US Open and thus celebrated his first two Grand Slam titles.
“To be honest, I’m not really surprised,” Becker said of Sinner’s rise. His determination is outstanding. Sinner could remain number one for a long time, said Becker.
The 56-year-old accepted the award together with ATP boss Andrea Gaudenzi. Becker was greeted with applause by the audience; The hall was almost completely full before Alexander Zverev’s first appearance this year at the ATP Finals. As a former front runner, Becker also belongs to the newly founded “Number 1 Club” of the professional organization ATP. He became world number one in 1991. This was a “childhood dream” come true for him, Becker recalled.
Meanwhile, Sinner still faces a ban despite an acquittal after two positive doping tests. The World Anti-Doping Agency Wada recently lodged an appeal with the International Court of Arbitration for Sports in Lausanne.
Sinner started the year-end tournament in Turin on Sunday evening with a confident two-set win against the Australian Alex de Minaur. On Tuesday (8.30 p.m./Sky), the local hero can underline his role as favorite to win the title in his homeland in a duel with the American Taylor Fritz.
Interview between Emma Rodriguez, Editor of Time.news, and Boris Becker, former tennis champion and current tennis analyst.
Emma Rodriguez: Welcome, Boris! It’s a pleasure to have you here with us today. You’ve just honored Jannik Sinner for his remarkable achievement of becoming the world number one. What were your immediate thoughts upon recognizing him?
Boris Becker: Thank you, Emma. It’s wonderful to be here. My first thought when I see Jannik Sinner is that I’m not really surprised by his success. His talent, work ethic, and mindset were evident from a young age. This honor is just the beginning of what I believe will be a very bright future for him in tennis.
Emma: Considering Jannik has replaced a legend like Novak Djokovic, how significant do you view this transition in the sport?
Boris: It’s monumental. Novak has set an incredible standard in tennis with his achievements. For Jannik to step up and take over as number one at such a young age highlights not only his exceptional skills but also the evolution of the sport. We are witnessing a generational shift, and it’s exciting to see young players like Sinner rise to the occasion.
Emma: Speaking of Jannik’s rise, he is only 23 years old. What do you think sets him apart from other young talents in the sport?
Boris: Apart from his undeniable talent and footwork, it’s his mental fortitude that sets him apart. Jannik has a maturity on the court that’s rare for his age. He handles pressure beautifully, and his ability to remain composed during crucial points really makes a difference. Plus, he’s constantly learning and evolving, which is essential for any athlete aiming for the top.
Emma: You’ve had a successful career yourself. How does it feel to mentor and honor the new generation of tennis players like Jannik?
Boris: It’s incredibly fulfilling. I love the sport, and I believe it’s important to give back to it. Jannik’s success is a reflection of the hard work of many individuals behind the scenes—coaches, families, and even the fans who support him. I feel honored to play a small part in honoring those who are carrying the sport forward.
Emma: Looking ahead, what do you predict for Jannik Sinner in the coming seasons?
Boris: If he continues on this path and maintains his work ethic and focus, I see him becoming a dominant force in tennis. He’s capable of winning multiple Grand Slam titles. But, of course, he must navigate the pressures and expectations that come with being number one. That’s where the real challenge lies, and I believe he’s up for it.
Emma: Boris, any advice for young aspiring tennis players looking up to champions like Jannik?
Boris: Absolutely! My advice would be to focus on your passion for the game, stay dedicated, and always be open to learning. Tennis is as much about mental strength as it is about physical ability. Enjoy the journey, and make sure to surround yourself with a supportive team that shares your vision.
