Back from the Caribbean, Bojo has begun to coordinate his team: will it be the salvation of Great Britain or the final blow for a country now in the balance?

LONDON Boris is the man to beat. The chances of Johnson’s return to Downing Street they grow by the hour e his opponents are mobilizing to stop him: but the current dynamic points in only one direction, namely the incredible political resurrection of the prime minister who was forced to resign only three and a half months ago. Johnson currently leads the race for nomination among Conservative MPs, ahead of former Chancellor Rishi Sunak.
It takes 100 votes to go to the final stage and only the two of them seem able to collect them: after which there will be an online consultation among party members. But the opinion of the foregone basis: they want Boris.
At the time of Liz Truss’s resignation yesterday, the favorite to succeed her seemed to be Sunak: but now that Boris threw himself into the arena, everything changed very quickly. Johnson was on vacation in the Caribbean but would already be on his way back: and in the meantime he began coordinating his troops, even using the old cell phone that he had had to abandon after the number was published online. Ancient allies, financiers, members of the electoral team who had joined him in the 2019 vote: the Boris team immediately took shape, coordinated by Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Minister of Business.
The strength of Johnson’s campaign is that he is the only one with a real popular mandate, having swept the elections three years agoand so it can ignore Labor’s call for early voting.
In addition, Boris presents himself as the candidate able to revive the fortunes of the conservatives, sent to peak in the polls by Liz Truss: only Johnson capable of holding together that coalition of right-wing bourgeois and former Labor working class that guaranteed the victory of Brexit and the triumph of the Tories in 2019.
But Boris remains a divisive figure, even within conservatives. Several lawmakers said they would be ready to leave the party if Johnson returned as prime minister: i his detractors point out that Boris is now perceived as an untrustworthy liar by public opinion and no longer so sure that he is a real vote-catcher. But the true sword of Damoclesparliamentary inquiry which will have to determine if Johnson lied to Parliament about Downing Street party scandal during lockdown: if found guilty, Boris could be suspended as a deputy, which would throw his eventual government into chaos.
At the moment, however, the wind is blowing in Johnson’s sails: if he really returned to Downing Street, he would emulate his idol’s feat, Winston Churchill, who managed to get re-elected after being defeated by Labor Attlee in the postwar period.
On the other hand, Boris had made no secret of not considering his political career closed: in Parliament, he had concluded the farewell speech with a quote from the Terminator, hasta la vista, baby, and everyone knows that the other sentence of the character by Schwarzenegger I’ll be back, torner. Just as, taking leave of Downing Street, he had compared himself to Cincinnato: that the Senate begged to return to save the Roman Republic in danger.
