Europa League or Conference League, that’s what it’s all about tomorrow at Union. While CEO Philippe Bormans is still looking for a striker, he assures: “Quantitatively and qualitatively, we are ready to compete on three fronts.”

All in all, Union traveled relaxed to Geneva, Switzerland. You would for less. The starting position (2-0 after the first leg) is reassuring. The idea that Union will play in Europe even with a heavy loss, albeit in the Conference League, also relieves some pressure.

“We shouldn’t be silly about that,” says CEO Philippe Bormans. “It would be a different matter if this was an ‘all or nothing’ game, like at Club Brugge, Racing Genk and Gent. But there will certainly be pressure. That 2-0 is a very nice bonus, but it remains an away game. Even in an almost empty stadium, that will be a special atmosphere. We must not forget the importance of the game in those circumstances. Then I think we should definitely be able to pull this off. It is and remains football. Everything is possible there. A goal can fall quickly, we saw last year in Rangers. The circumstances then were different than they are now. But I don’t think the differences in level are such that we can lose 3-0 in Switzerland. In principle, it should not go wrong, but it remains football.”

Bormans assures that this group of players is able to compete again on three fronts for a long time. “We are armed both quantitatively and qualitatively. It is every year for the outside world to look with wide eyes at who has brought in Union again. (winks) And rightly so, because those people are often not well known. But we are already convinced of their qualities and we hope that they can also convince you of their qualities. And then we hope for another good season.”

In any case, the transfer policy will not be adjusted whether or not it participates in the Europa League. Union is still looking for a striker, that is priority number one. “We are indeed working hard on that. We will do our best to bring it in as soon as possible. We are mainly looking for a big, strong type of striker. A bit of a replacement for Boniface. We certainly have that in mind, but it can always turn out differently, right? (winks) We’ll see if anything else comes along. But I suspect not. It is by far the craziest transfer window I have experienced.”

After all, Union said goodbye to half a base team and replaced it with many newcomers. “It is incredible for everyone at the club what we have already achieved. This failed last year. It’s a record summer, that’s for sure.”
