German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the head of the Austrian Cabinet Karl Nehammer sharply criticized the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell for his position on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict; Scholz and Nehammer believe that Borrell’s statements are directed against Israel.
As Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru, sources told Politico about this.
During a meeting of EU leaders in March, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and his Austrian counterpart Karl Nehammer confronted Josep Borrell over his months of outspoken criticism of Israel, according to two officials briefed on the exchange.
It is noted that the “message” of Scholz and Nehammer to Borrell in a private conversation was that the latter “does not speak on behalf of Germany and Austria.”
The leaders’ rebuke of the EU’s top diplomat was “highly unusual” as Borrell’s role is to represent the European Union when it comes to foreign and security policy issues, the newspaper said. “One official said the language was ‘drastic’ and took place in the presence of other European leaders,” the newspaper added.
