Gladbach has only won one of the last ten games. Before the game against Wolfsburg, the pressure was high. And Borussia withstood this.
Borussia Mönchengladbach has gained some breathing room in the relegation battle. In the away game at VfL Wolfsburg, the “Foals” turned a 0-1 deficit into a 3.1 win and jumped to eleventh place in the table.
All of Gladbach’s goals came in the second half. Ko Itakura (52nd) and Nathan Ngoumou (58th) made the visiting fans celebrate twice within six minutes. Rocco Reitz scored the final point shortly before the end (88th). Ridle Baku scored for Wolfsburg in the first half (7th).
That’s how the game went
Before the game, the air had become thinner for both the hosts and Gladbach. The basement children 1. FC Köln and Mainz had made up ground with their victories – but the Wolves in particular didn’t notice the pressure at the start of the game.
The home team took the wind from the perfect Hasenhüttl start in Bremen (2-0) and immediately rewarded themselves for their initial enthusiasm. And Gladbach? Played quite well and approached Pavao Pervan’s goal with a header from Maximilian Wöber (21′) and Nico Elvedi (28′) – but there was initially a lack of sharpness and determination in the Wolfsburg half. And in the transition movements, the Seoane team repeatedly appeared vulnerable and weak in duels. That had to change after half-time for a real chance of scoring points.
Even after the restart, Borussia didn’t set off any fireworks, but this time the away team got off to the perfect start. The Wolves also showed weaknesses in their backward movement – and Itakura was rewarded for his courage to simply try from a distance against passively defending hosts. After that, Gladbach clearly had the momentum and Ngoumou caused big celebrations in the away block.
Wolfsburg then ran and fought for the equalizer. But the guests fought back with passion and earned the away three points they longed for.
