Boryeong City has completed the beautiful 4-day journey of the ’16th National Marine Sports Festival’. The 16th National Marine Sports Festival, which was held in Boryeong, a global marine leisure tourism city, from July 31 to August 3 for 4 days, has come to a grand conclusion with the closing ceremony on the 3rd.

Hosted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and organized by Chungcheongnam-do, Boryeong City, Boryeong City Sports Association, Korea Marine Youth Federation, and member sports organizations of the Korea Sports Council (yacht, canoe, fin swimming, triathlon), this event was held at Daecheon and Wonsando beaches and Boryeong Yacht Stadium under the slogan, “Let’s enjoy the ocean festival! Let’s do OK Boryeong together!”

In this competition, 1,250 athletes from 5 groups participated in 4 official events (▲yacht, canoe, finswimming, triathlon) and 3 extra events (▲rubber boat, dragon boat, flyboard), and 107 athletes won the Minister’s Award, 112 the Governor’s Award, and 107 the Mayor’s Award in 131 categories in 7 events.

In particular, in the triathlon, the last runner (4 hours and 3 minutes) came in about 2 hours later than the first place (2 hours and 7 minutes), but he did not give up and finished the race, making it a place where one could vividly experience the passion and challenging spirit through sports.

In addition, five types of marine experiences (▲sea kayak, SUP paddle board, ocean canoe, yacht, marine adventure) and nine types of land experiences (▲ssuksak caricature, ocean tattoo, photo sweet, whipped cream pool sea grip tok, marine luminous bracelet making, etc.) were held, providing an opportunity to experience marine leisure sports and various marine crafts that are usually difficult to access for free.

The opening ceremony featured splendid performances by invited singers Bok Ji-eun, Lee Seok-hoon, Hiki, Ailee, and Lee Chan-won.

At the closing ceremony, the flag was returned to Boryeong City and transferred to the next host city, Siheung City. The beautiful four-day journey came to a successful close with a farewell speech by the Boryeong Mayor and a mini-concert by the Yuk Joong-wan Band.

Mayor Kim Dong-il said, “Many people who visited Boryeong during the summer vacation season thoroughly enjoyed the 16th National Marine Sports Festival and the 27th Boryeong Mud Festival,” and “This festival served as an opportunity to widely publicize Boryeong’s image as a global marine leisure tourism city.”

He also said, “In order to hold this competition successfully, there were competition officials and volunteers who silently carried out their respective roles, and I would like to express my gratitude to the citizens of Boryeong who spared no support and cooperation for the success of the competition, as well as to all the athletes who spared no effort in displaying their honed skills.”
