Boseong County has taken steps to take care of the health of the elderly in the heat. Boseong County announced that it will be focusing on ‘protection measures for the safety of the elderly’ for two weeks from July 29 to August 9 to ensure that the elderly can enjoy a healthy and safe summer in the heat wave.

Strengthening safety checks and care in preparation for heat waves

Boseong County is mobilizing its human care network of dedicated social workers, life support workers, and senior care workers to conduct activities such as checking on the summer well-being of the beneficiaries of senior care services, such as ‘Tailored Care Services for the Elderly,’ ‘Senior Care Workers,’ and ‘We Take Care of the Elderly Living Alone in Our Neighborhood,’ and educating them on how to prepare for heat waves.

In addition, we prepare for sudden crisis situations by utilizing ICT (information and communication broadcasting equipment and services) devices such as emergency safety and security services that connect directly to 119 in the event of an emergency and AI care robots.

In case of special weather warnings such as heat waves or heavy rain, safety is quickly checked through human safety nets and ICT devices, and heat wave prevention rules such as refraining from outdoor activities are promoted through the smart village broadcasting system.

Introduction of heat wave prevention education and flexible working hours system at senior job creation projects

Starting from the end of May, we are making active efforts to ensure the safety of the elderly by providing mandatory heat-related illness prevention education to 2,860 people participating in the senior job program and conducting on-site monitoring.

In particular, in preparation for heat wave situations, we are providing guidance on sufficient rest and water intake and providing preventive supplies such as bottled water and cold packs.

Additionally, from July to August, to prevent a surge in heat-related illnesses, the operating hours will be adjusted one hour earlier, from 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., to avoid hot hours.

Expanding support for cooling costs per route and promoting heat shelters

In order to ease the burden of cooling costs for senior citizens living in senior centers, we are providing monthly cooling costs of 175,000 won, which is 20,000 won more than last year, to 450 senior centers.

Since July, we have inspected whether the air conditioners at 411 facilities designated as heat shelters, including senior citizen care service providers and senior citizen centers, are operating and whether they are always open. We are also operating various health management programs and actively promoting them so that more residents can use the heat shelters.

Kim Cheol-woo, the governor of Boseong County, said, “This year, the average temperature in July and August is expected to be high, and the number of heat wave days and tropical nights is expected to increase compared to previous years, so it is more important than ever to prevent heat-related illnesses in vulnerable groups.” He added, “We will carefully implement heat wave protection measures so that all residents can have a healthy summer.”
