Boseong-gun will hold the ‘Traveling Traditional Ssireum’ at the National Agricultural Heritage Festival. The Korea Ssireum Association announced that the ‘Traveling Traditional Ssireum’ will be held at the Korea Tea Culture Park on September 6th, the day the Boseong-gun National Important Agricultural and Fishery Heritage Festival is held.

‘Traditional Ssireum on the Go’ is a program of the ‘National Important Agricultural and Fishery Heritage Festival in conjunction with the 12th Boseong World Tea Expo’ prepared to promote the cultural and traditional value of ‘Ssireum’, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and a national intangible cultural heritage, and is hosted by the Jeollanam-do Ssireum Association and Boseong-gun Ssireum Association.

The competition will be held from 1:00 to 3:00 PM on the 6th at the National Agricultural Heritage Festival site, which is a combination of green tea fields and a grassy plaza, with a special wrestling ring set up. Applications for participation will be accepted on-site for tourists, foreigners, and the general public. The tournament will be held in the form of adult men’s and women’s divisions.

In particular, the wrestling competition on this day will be hosted by former Halla Jangsa Jangsa Lee Gi-su, and the Yeosu Technical High School wrestling team will perform a demonstration, adding to the exciting atmosphere.

In addition, an experiential classroom will be operated where anyone, regardless of age or gender, including preschool children, can experience simple wrestling techniques and how to tie a loincloth on a sand rink, which is expected to be another fun way to enjoy the heritage festival.

All participants in the competition will be given a competition uniform and souvenirs, and the winner, runner-up, and joint third place winners will be awarded a trophy and a gift certificate (worth 200,000 to 50,000 won).

Kim Cheol-woo, the governor of Boseong County, said, “We planned this competition to contribute to the revitalization of ‘Ssireum,’ a national intangible cultural heritage that has been passed down to the present through a long history based on our ethnic community culture.” He added, “I hope that ‘Traditional Ssireum on the Go’ will be an opportunity for youth, children, and foreigners to experience and come into contact with our traditional culture.”

Meanwhile, at the Boseong-gun ‘National Important Agricultural and Fishery Heritage Festival with the 12th Boseong World Tea Expo’, in addition to the ‘traditional wrestling on the go’, there will be evaluations and competitions in five categories, congratulatory performances, academic seminars, and experience programs.
