Massachusetts Snowstorm grounds Hundreds of Flights in Boston, Hartford
A major winter storm has triggered widespread flight cancellations across Massachusetts and Connecticut, leaving travelers stranded as heavy snowfall continues. As of 8 p.m. Sunday, the majority of flights scheduled to depart from Boston Logan Airport on Monday had already been called off, with significant disruptions also reported at Hartford’s Bradley International airport.
The storm, which has already dumped over 10 inches of snow in some areas, is expected to continue impacting travel well into Monday. According to data from FlightAware.com, nearly 60% of Monday’s departing flights from Logan Airport were cancelled as of Sunday evening.Airlines proactively cancelled 66% of all departing flights from the airport on Sunday itself, anticipating the worsening conditions.
“The situation is evolving rapidly, and airlines are prioritizing safety,” a senior official stated.
Bradley International Airport in Hartford is facing similar challenges.By 8 p.m. sunday, 40% of departing flights for Monday had been cancelled, according to FlightAware.com. Travelers are strongly advised to check with their airlines for the latest updates on their flight status.
The National Weather Service reports that parts of Massachusetts had already received 10 inches or more of snow by early Sunday evening. The agency warns that rapid snowfall rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour are expected to persist through at least midnight. While the heaviest snowfall is expected to taper off in Eastern and central Massachusetts by 8 p.m., Western Massachusetts may not see a significant reduction in snowfall until 9 p.m. or 10 p.m.
Lighter snow is still predicted to fall across the state on Monday, though conditions are expected to improve throughout the day. The disruption to air travel highlights the significant impact even a single winter storm can have on regional transportation networks. Travelers should prepare for potential delays and cancellations throughout the week as airlines work to recover from the backlog.
