For the third time in the last four rounds of the Brasileirão, Artur Jorge’s Botafogo failed to win in the championship. The team coached by the Portuguese manager was surprisingly defeated this Sunday at home by Juventude, 3-2, in the duel of the 22nd round of the Brazilian League, thus putting the leadership of the standings at risk before facing Flamengo in the next round. Mengão, currently in 3rd place in the table, has not yet played this round – they face Abel Ferreira’s Palmeiras today starting at 8 PM at Maracanã – but they know that, in case of a win today, they will fight for the championship lead in the 23rd round, on Botafogo’s ground.
Regarding the match between Juventude and Botafogo, the home team took the lead in the 9th minute through Danilo Boza, with Carrillo increasing the advantage just before halftime (45’+4). At the start of the second half, Marcelinho, who assisted for the 2-0, extended Juventude’s lead (48′) and further complicated Botafogo’s calculations, which still managed to reduce the deficit from three to just one goal on the scoreboard, with goals from Cuiabano (69′) and Marçal (81′).
