Thiruvananthapuram: The Child Rights Commission has ordered the abolition of boys and girls schools in the state from the next academic year (2023-24). All schools should be converted into mixed schools and co-education should be implemented. Prior to this, the commission ordered that the education department should take necessary measures to improve the physical conditions of schools including toilets and to make parents aware of the need for co-education.

A resident of Anchal said that gender justice is being denied by running separate schools for boys and girls and co-education should be implemented here. The commission’s order was on a petition filed by Isaac Paul. There are 280 girls’ schools and 164 boys’ schools functioning across the state. The Commission also directed that the Principal Secretary, Director of Public Education and Director of SECERT should respond within 90 days of taking action on the order.
