bp has announced a new contract for the operation and maintenance of the subsea construction vessel Khankendi to support operations in the Caspian Sea, Day.Az reports, citing bp.

“The contract, worth over $300 million, has been awarded to a consortium of Saipem Contracting Netherlands BV, BOS Shelf LLC and BOS Shelf International FZCO. The consortium won a tender announced in 2022. The contract will support bp and its partners’ One Ship strategy to further improve the safety and efficiency of offshore operations in the Caspian,” the press release said.

The scope of work under the contract will include

– general operation of the vessel “Khankendi” and its technical maintenance,

– underwater construction and installation works,

– underwater inspection, maintenance and repair,

– providing rapid response capabilities for operations across all BP-operated assets in the Caspian Sea, including subsea pipelines and production infrastructure, as well as support for services required during field operations.

bp quotes Cathal Kelly, Vice President for Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey, as saying: “We are delighted to have successfully completed this complex tender process, which lasted over two years. This agreement was designed to enable bp and its partners to use a single vessel strategy. This means that Khankendi will now be used as the main vessel for all our offshore construction, installation, inspection, repair and maintenance work, as well as emergency response, making our operations safer and more efficient.”

It should be noted that the contract was initially signed for a period of three years with the possibility of extension for another two years.

Khankendi is a $378 million flagship vessel built at the Baku Shipyard and commissioned in September 2017.

This subsea construction vessel, incorporating the latest technological advances, was designed and built specifically for the Shah Deniz Project within the Subsea Production System.

The vessel is 155 meters long, 32 meters wide and has a main deck area of 2,000 square meters.

It has a lifting capacity of 5,000 tonnes. It has two engine rooms with six 4.4 MW generators and two 3.2 MW generators. It is equipped with a dynamic positioning system for operation in 3.5 meter high waves (Hs), a 900 metric ton main crane for underwater operations at depths of up to 600 meters, two 18-person diving capsule systems, two remotely operated underwater vehicles and heavy-duty equipment.

The Khankendi vessel can perform the most difficult work without the need for anchors.
